Every blessing calls for gratitude. Every good thing Allah has given us brings with it a duty of gratitude and responsibility towards Him. By declaring, “If you give thanks, I will surely increase My blessings upon you,” (İbrahim, 7), our Lord has linked the continuation of blessings to gratitude. Yet for a Muslim, one of the greatest blessings is being part of our Prophet’s ummah—the community of our revered Prophet Muhammed (peace and blessings be upon him). Such a great blessing surely calls for great gratitude.
The Qur’an describes the greatness of this blessing as follows: “Indeed, Allah has bestowed a great favour upon the believers by sending them a messenger from among themselves, who recites His verses to them, purifies them, and teaches them the Book and wisdom.” (Âl-i İmrân, 164). This is no ordinary favour, but an immense gift.
Moreover, he has never forgotten us. In the Hereafter, when everyone says, “Myself, myself,” he will be the one saying, “My ummah, my ummah.” Our Lord describes him in these words: “There has come to you a messenger from among yourselves who is deeply distressed by your suffering; he cares greatly for you and is most compassionate and merciful towards the believers.” (Tevbe, 128).
So how do we show gratitude for belonging to the ummah of our revered Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?
By knowing him, loving him, inspiring others to love him, and following the path he showed us. By not merely reading about his Sunnah in books, but bringing it into our lives. By taking his character as our example and putting his compassion, justice, honesty, and kindness towards others into practice. “Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have a fine example, for those who hope to meet Allah and the Last Day and remember Allah often.” (Ahzâb, 21).
It is, of course, good to say that we love him. But true love also requires us to follow the path of the person we love. The Qur’an sets out this standard clearly: “Say: If you love Allah, follow me so that Allah may love you and forgive your sins.” (Âl-i İmrân, 31). Our Prophet also said, “None of you has faith (in its fullest sense) until I am dearer to him than his mother, his father, his child, and all people.” (Buhârî, Müslim). Love, then, is not merely a claim on our lips, but a priority reflected in our lives.
If we love our revered Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), we must uphold his moral example, practise his Sunnah in our lives, share the truths he brought with others, and make his cause our own concern. When our mother Âişe was asked about his character, she said, “His character was the Qur’an.” (Müslim). He was a living Qur’an. We, too, should at least dare to look into that mirror and see ourselves.
Today we must ask ourselves: How well do we know the Prophet whose ummah we belong to? How closely do we follow his Sunnah? How fully do we embody his character in our families, our work, our trade, and our dealings with others? Our beloved Prophet said, “I was sent only to perfect good character.” (Ahmed b. Hanbel, Beyhakî). If we are impatient at home, dishonest in the marketplace, and indifferent towards our neighbours, we have strayed from the most fundamental purpose of his prophetic mission.
Let us not forget that we show our appreciation of a blessing not merely by receiving it, but by fulfilling what it requires of us. Gratitude for belonging to the ummah of our revered Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) means following his path, keeping his Sunnah alive, and presenting his noble character as an example to humanity. He was sent as “a mercy to all worlds” (Enbiyâ, 107). The ummah of the Prophet of mercy must likewise be a mercy to those around them.
May our Lord make us not merely members of the ummah in name, but people who truly live with the awareness and responsibility that belonging to it entails. Amen.
